Diplo – Express Yourself EP (Review + Stream)

Thomas Wentz, better known as Diplo, is one of Electronic Dance Music’s most polarizing characters. His diversity has allowed him to work with everyone from MIA to Justin Beiber to Sleigh Bells and everything in between. He has brought you stars from MIA to Dillon Francis. He has been photographed with whipped cream cans on stage. He, basically, doesn’t give a fuck. With moombahton’s booming popularity, Diplo releases Express Yourself, an EP based mostly around 108 BPMs and the island flavored electronic jams that is moombah.

With 6 tracks and features ranging from Datsik to Elephant Man, Express Yourself has great variety for a genre-specific EP. The undeniable single, “Express Yourself” featuring Nicky Da B had an infectious response towards its ASSinine video (below). If the fast scatting of Nicky Da B is too much, you can atleast mute it, throw on any track of your preference and thank Diplo later. However I’d wager to say no one was muting the track. With influence from New Orleans bounce music, the catchy bleeps and bloops turned this in to one of the hottest songs around.

“Barely Standing” featuring Datsik & Sabi is the moombahton equivalent of the “Pick Your Poison” collab we previously saw from Diplo and Datsik. However, this one has the sexy voice of Sabi talkin’ about gettin’ low and all that good stuff that gets girls going hyphy in the club. Add that to the 108 moombah-rhythm and you have an instant dancefloor classic.

“Move Around” has that strong island flare brought to you by world-renowned dancehall artist Elephant Man. The world-music / EDM mix is awesome to hear and really makes you think where electronic music will go as it spreads around the whole world. “Butter Theme” is more of a straight up Diplo-flavored moombah track, but that isn’t a bad thing at all. Any dance song with a girl talking about her booty is cool with us at DubEra.com
