Thievery Corporation brought their circus of a live show through the Big Apple last night for a night of incredible music. The revolving door of guest vocalists made each song feel fresh as they took us on a tour of the world, from dub down in Jamaica to the Brazilian influenced Saudade.
The night got off to a slow start, though, with bass issues plaguing the first few tracks. Reggae vocalist Sleepy Wonder came out, assured the crowd they’d get it fixed and they did. Once the bass started kicking so did the audience, and each song drew us further down the rabbit hole that is a Thievery Corp. show.
Included in the set were “Lebanese Blonde,” “Radio Retaliation,” and a very memorable performance of “Depth of My Soul,” which saw vocalist Shana Halligan came out in a see-through dress that had the entire crowd swooning while tickling our eyes and ears alike.
Each vocalist was captivating, though, and each had their unique style to compliment Thievery’s perfect beats. All-in-all there were 16 people on stage for the Thievery Corporation live show, a number that dwarfsthe sit-ins typical of your headiest jam band.
Not enough can be said about these guys and their show; it’s perfect. Aside from a few technical issues, it was one of the best shows of the summer. We can’t wait to see them at Hulaween later this year with String Cheese Incident!
