EVENT PREVIEW: Thievery Corporation & Lee Fields Play NYC 8/15

thieverynyc

Thievery Corporation is set to play JBL Pier 97 in New York City on August 16th. The band is one of the few artists I can really get countdown-the-days excited. Like a chick before prom, I’m anticipating the big moment where the Thieves come out and create magic along the Hudson River.

Who better to kick off the extravaganza than Lee Fields & The Expressions? Lee Fields, at age 64, is putting out incredible music that wreaks of nostalgia. I feel like its the 4th of July 1975 in NYC when I hear his soulful vocals tell a story over the jazzy Expressions instrumentation. Here’s a few gems…

Since moving to Brooklyn, I’ve been getting schooled on modern-day soul music, and it’s really incredible how much awesome music is out there. It’s definitely a Spotify hole worth diving in to if you want to start with a Lee Fields or a Charles Bradley and peep the similar artists.

A little more familiar to me is Thievery Corporation. Best known, to me, for making the best music out there. I really can’t praise these guys enough. From Rob Garza’s funky DJ sets to their rich live show, these guys know music and know how to get the party going. They hold no punches as they bring along a slew of singers, hype men, musicians and sound, creating a truly one-of-a-kind live show.

They’re currently on tour supporting their newest masterpiece Saudade. The last time I saw them was a couple years ago at Electric Forest, so I’m amped to hear some new tunes along with some old favorites. Here’s a full, live show to get us hyped for when they come to the Big Apple next weekend…
