New York City’s Summer Stage is a killer concept. Who wouldn’t like epic free concerts in beautiful parks? Does the thought of Tedeschi Trucks Band bringin’ the soul to Central Park not tickle your fancy? Of course it does! And it tickles our’s too.
This year’s Summer Stage lineup is absolutely great. From heavy metal to smooth jazz, there are plenty of reasons to hit up the parks this year and enjoy some music. Here are the events we’re most excited for, all of which are free unless noted otherwise. The full schedule is just below our …
Tedeschi Trucks Band @ Central Park on May 18
Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks have an incredible band going. With the Allman Brothers retired, these guys are kicking it into full gear for 2015. This should be a great start to the summer!
Mastodon + Clutch @ Central Park on May 19 [Paid Show]
Mastodon have to be one of the best metal bands of all time at this point. They’re blend of sludge, stoner, doom, and thrash will be gnar-gnar in the middle of beautiful Central Park.
The Felice Brothers & The Barr Brothers @ Red Hook Park on June 4
Battle of the brothers? Both of these bands put their own spin on indie-folk music, and it should be a great kick-off for the Governors Ball weekend.
Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires @ Corona Park on June 7
If you aren’t going to Gov Ball on Sunday, you have to go see Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires at the site of the World’s Fair. This will be a rockin’ soul show!
Lettuce & Soul Rebels @ Central Park on June 13
Shout outs to Lettuce! We’ve been covering these guys for years and couldn’t be more stoked that they get to bring their funktastic jams to Central Park this year. Super sick!
Maxi Priest + Gyptian @ Central Park on June 27
The last reggae show we went to in Central Park was Chronixx and Junior Reid, and it was absolutely INSANE. We couldn’t even get into the show, because it was so packed, but there was a good couple thousand people outside the venue listening to the music, dancing, singing, and lighting up.
George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic @ Queensbridge Park on July 15
George Clinton and his funky squadron may be just slightly passed their prime, but I’ve heard they still put on a great show. Since it’s free, you have to go check these legends out.
Bombino + Young Fathers @ Central Park on July 25
Bombino’s blend of world music and American blues makes for a concert that is definitely worth attending.
Ratking + Bishop Nehru @ East River Park on August 5
A couple of upcoming MCs will play a free show in Manhattan, at the East River Park. Support good hip hop!
Father John Misty + Angel Olsen @ Central Park on August 5 [Paid Show]
If hip hop isn’t your thing, maybe Father John Misty’s hilarious blend of folk and indie is. With a full band in tow, and Angel Olsen supporting, this should be worth the money for sure.
Caribou @ East River Park on August 6
Our Love was one of our favorite records last year, so we have to attend this free show in Manhattan!
Glass Animals + Taylor McFerrin @ Central Park on August 9
McFerrin’s Early Riser was a great record of 2014, blending downtempo, jazz, and soul with some really spacey stuff. Glass Animals and Taylor McFerrin makes a great bill for a Sunday afternoon affair.
Charlie Parker Jazz ft Dr. Lonnie Smith @ Marcus Garvey Park on August 22
I first heard of Dr. Lonnie Smith because he was sampled on Jay Z’s “Dead Presidents.” Perhaps more importantly, he’s a legendary jazz pianist.
