Accomplished pianist and musical trailblazer Vijay Iyer sets up shop at the storied Village Vanguard this week, continuing to celebrate the release of his Sextet album Far From Over. Charged by intense composition with a relentlessly progressive ideology, the music on that album translates wonderfully into the live setting, particularly at the incredible Greenwich Village jazz venue which is renowned for its acoustics.
Through the course of the hour-long late set on Tuesday night, Iyer lead the groups to tracks off the aforementioned ECM Records album, along with at least one cut from his Trio record Break Stuff. “Hood” was the composition off that Trio record, a skittish nod to techno producer Robert Hood. With a three-piece horn section in tow, the song breathed new life as it weaved through a number of different rhythmic decorations anchored by drummer Jeremy Dutton.
Far From Over & Break Stuff are both available wherever music is sold or streamed. While Vijay Iyer’s current run at Village Vanguard is partially sold out, some shows are still available here.
