Canadians all over southern Ontario were preparing for one hot and humid Canada Day, with temperatures reaching 43C/109F making Canada’s 151st birthday one of the hottest to date. Islanders gathered in Toronto at the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal and headed off to Hanlan’s Point where from the minute you stepped foot on the island you could hear the muffled kick drums in the distance. As islanders ventured further into the island the music grew louder and clearer until you were greeted by the gorgeous open grassy field with trees that lead you to the entrance. Staff was great and super helpful right from when they took you in the festival, entry was super quick because how well managed and organized everything was.
The clear sky, humid air and beating sun mixed together to form a unique warm experience but the venue was more than prepared with a big water station, loads of access to water and drinks, shade, sunscreen, vendors and food trucks with vegan options. The beer was ice cold, the food was delicious and the music was incredible, with Billy Kenny starting the fire as the crowd slowly grew as the heat intensified, it was clear the party had started. By the end of Jackmasters set the whole venue was packed.
The Moog audio stage packed a totally different vibe and atmosphere with one of the most memorable sets by Robert Babicz that had islanders in a trance. Martinez Brothers back at the main stage were properly setting up the stage to a very unpredicted set by Anna who had absolutely surprised most of the Islanders. The stage suddenly got dark and red almost hellish with a dark and heavy fast bass track that totally changed the whole vibe and atmosphere, without a doubt her set was the best set all day and one of the best techno sets played in Toronto all year. Anna blew all expectations out of the water with her unique sounds and style, quite honestly it couldn’t have been a better way to end the Canada day celebrations. If anyone left early to the ferry you made a critical mistake.
