Earlier this year, the Experience Jimi Hendrix tour finished its final dates in North America. The tour celebrated the musical mastery of iconic Jimi Hendrix – an artist who died far too young at the age of 27.
When Hendrix passed away in 1970, the all-conquering onstage juggernaut was only just reaching the height of his fame. He was headlining Woodstock and Monterey Pop Festival but his untimely death in 1970 due to asphyxia brought Hendrix’s career to a sudden end.
It’s a testament however, to his talent, that there are still shows devoted to the Seattle musician. The recently concluded Experience Hendrix tour featured blues icon Buddy Guy, Zakk Wylde (who’s played with Ozzy Osbourne as well as Black Label Society), as well as Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Johnson, Dweezil Zappa and Billy Cox who played bass for both Band of Gypsys and the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
The tour took in notable venues like the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino as well as finishing at the Casino Ballroom in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. The 27-date tour was just the start for this popular road show, as it is expected to his the road once more in 2017 after garnering positive reviews amongst the mainstream media.
With gaming companies also latching onto Hendrix’s appeal, his popularity has transcended generations. Whether it was his appearance in Guitar Hero as a hidden character that helped garner a newfangled fan base or even the recent Jimi Hendrix slot game on Spin Genie, this iconic figure continues to be featured in pop culture relevant trends due to his constant standing in the music community.
On September 18 this year, it will mark 47 years since Hendrix’s passing. Yet as we approach half a century without this mercurial guitarist behind the likes of ‘Foxey Lady’, ‘Purple Haze’ and ‘Hey Joe’, his songs still sound as good as when they were first played by the man himself in the 60s.
