So if you’re like me, you’re constantly searching for new music…not new due to recency, but unheard to your ears.
Yesterday my room mate hits me up on Facebook while I’m on my way to the Gramatik / Exmag show.
He said, “got a fire record today.”
I replied, “What is it?”
“dude, we’re gunna jam it when you get to the street (our house). Just an illy you aint ever heard of. I aint even heard of it, but I can tell it’s going to be fire. dropped $30 on it.”
“Dude what is it!?”
“Tell me you want me to ruin the surprise bro… Tell me that you have it in you and I will tell you.” “Lol. Nvm.”
He later teased me with this picture and said, “this is your hint,” which heightened my anticipation.
When I get home, the record is placed on the kitchen counter, standing up straight with its gatefold. A cartoon image of this funny fellow on the front. I am greeted with this video.
The anticipation heightened! Who is this porky little hispanic? What did he do? That intro music was badass…I hope that was him!
Little did I know I was about to be taken by surprise during the listen of Tim Maia’s soulful, funky, latin-flavored music. Apparently when Barry White first came out he was known as “the American Tim Maia.” This dude is crazy, and his music is crazy dope. Thank you Tim Maia…thank you.
