Electric Forest Preview: DubEra’s 10 Must-See Sets

lineup-poster-large5

With Electric Forest right around the corner, we had to update you guys n who we are really excited to see. From the glitch-hoppin’ Grizmatik + Special Guests to the country-rockin’ Railroad Earth, this festival has tons to offer music festival patrons. Can’t wait to get in the Forest! In No particular order, here we go…

Digital Tape Machine

When: Thursday, 9.00-10.15pm

Where: Sherwood Court

Why: Joel & Kris from Umphrey’s Mcgee team up with a turntablist, amongst other musicians, to create a jamtronica supergroup? Count us in…

Lotus

When: Thursday, 12.30-2.00am

Where: Sherwood Court

Why: Aside from Lotus being a phenomenal band (you already knew that, right?), they are closing out the first night of the festival, which is a huge honor. While Headhunterz get the hardstyle going over at Tripolee, we’ll be chillin’ out with Lotus vibes in Sherwood Court.

Railroad Earth

When: Friday, 3.15-4.45pm

Where: Ranch Arena

Why: Railroad Earth’s neo-bluegrass style is perfect for the mainstage of electric forest. While the “EDM” craze has drawn a bunch of new blood to Rothbury, let’s not forget the roots of the festival ground and the live music that made it famous.

The Polish Ambassador

When: Friday, 7.45-8.45pm

Where: Tripolee

Why: We love this dude’s funky beats! Like he’s seriously one of our favorites right now. It’s unique, it feels good, it’s intelligent, it’s fun and it isn’t corny… at all. (Which is really saying something for new electronic music…) Do us a favor, listen to the tune below, and if you like what you hear, download it. Download all of his music. It’s free, anyways. Listen to it in the car or when you’r relaxing at home. If you don’t like it, that’s fine, but I’m pretty damn sure you will.

Grizmatik w/ Special Guests

When: Friday, 9.00-10.30pm

Where: Sherwood Court

Why: There’s a rule of thumb at festivals: when you see “Special Guests” billed on the schedule, you get your ass out there. Griz and Gramatik are a couple of electronic music’s rising stars, despite years of grinding (at least on Gramatik’s end). Who knows who they will bring out, with this lineup, anything can happen. If their music isn’t good enough, we’ve interviewed both of these cats and couldn’t have better things to say about either of them. Both class acts, both make hip-hoppin’ electronic beats.

Empire of the Sun

When: Saturday, 12.45-2.00am

Where: Ranch Arena

Why: I’m a sucker for these guys. The indie-house duo brings a huge production and full band to their live shows and I’ve never been able to see it. It’s gonna happen on the late night tip in the forest and I’m mad stoked on it!

Pretty Lights

When: Saturday, 11.00pm-12.45am

Where: Ranch Arena

Why: You already know what it is. Derek Vincent Smith, with a new album coming out just hours following his performance in the Electric Forest, will lay his signature brand of glitchy, funky, hippity-hoppity beats on an ecstatic crowd to close out the main stage. If you haven’t peeped the documentary that details how he made his new album, A Colormap of the Sun, you can should do that right here!

Beats Antique

When: Saturday, 12.15-1.45am

Where: Sherwood Court

Why: Closing out the festival this year is Beats Antique, who closed out the first night last year. I haven’t seen these guys in quite a little time and I’m interested to see what they do this year. Their “Get Lucky” cover and remix of Bob Marley’s “Satisfy My Soul” have me excited to see if they bring some new heat to the forest!

Ryan Hemsworth

When: Thursday, 7.45-8.45pm

Where: Tripolee

Why: It’s different and chill. It’s always interesting to see how a producer can capture an audience without playing the cheesy bangers or “rage” music. I saw this kid at BUKU and will definitely be attending his set in Tripolee at Forest.

and last but not least…

THE STRING CHEESE INCIDENT! Playing 3 full shows and 6 different sets, the String Cheese Incident will melt your face and stitch it back together for you. Have fun at Forest, we’ll see ya out there!
